Large crowd attends 3rd annual Bank of Missouri Heartland Hoopfest Saturday

Large crowds attended the 3rd annual Bank of Missouri Heartland Hoopfest held Saturday at the Perry Park Center in Perryville. Event coordinator Brian Roth said it was the best event for ticket sales held to date.

Play began at 9:30am and wrapped up around 10:30pm that night. In between high school basketball fans were treated to a full day of exciting high school basketball action.

Here is a brief recap of the games from the Bank of Missouri Heartland Hoopfest.

Game 1 - Saxony Lutheran 73, Christ Our Savior Lutheran 29

In the opening game of the 3rd annual Bank of Missouri Heartland Hoopfest, the battle of two Lutheran High Schools was won by Saxony Lutheran of Jackson as the Crusaders beat the Soldiers of Christ Our Savior Lutheran (Evansville, IL) 73-29.

The Crusaders outscored COSL 43-16 in the second half en route to the win. Saxony led 30-13 at the end of the first half.

Saxony's Ben Courtois tied a Hoopfest record for most 3-pointers in a game with four as part of his game high 18-point effort. Clay Obergoenner tossed in 13 while Alex Jauch added 11.

Jacob Meyer led the Soldiers with 14 points.

Game 2 - St. Vincent (Perryville) 64, Meadow Heights 37

The St. Vincent Indians came out the gates flying as they quickly built a 30-8 halftime lead en route to a 64-37 win over Meadow Heights.

Of the nine players dressed for the Indians, eight found their way into the scorebook. Greg Finger led the Indians with a game high 20 points, the only Indian to reach double digit scoring.

Meadow Heights was paced by Tyler Wagner's 14 point effort.

Meadow Heights tied the record for fewest points in a half with eight points. That tied the record set in 2004 by Du Quoin, IL when they played Jackson.

Game 3 - Perryville 45, Chester, IL 41

The Perryville Pirates picked up that elusive first win at the Bank of Missouri Heartland Hoopfest with a 45-41 win over the Yellow Jackets from nearby Chester, IL.

Going into Saturday's game at the Hoopfest, the Pirates were 0-2 in their appearance after losing to Cape Notre Dame in 2004 in double overtime and losing last year to Sainte Genevieve, MO.

Chester tied the game on a three-pointer by Caleb Zang with :10 seconds left but the Pirates got the winning basket with :03.1 seconds left and put the game away with free throws with under a second to play.

Rick Dunn led the Pirates with a game high 15 points. Brent Roth tossed in 11.

Chester was paced by Caleb Zang's 12 points. Chris Kern tossed in 10.

Game 4 - Scott County Central 85, Bell City 82

In the most heated contest of the day, the rivalry continued between Scott County Central and Bell City. It was the second meeting for the two teams already this season.

When the smoke cleared at the Park Center, Scott County Central defeated Bell City 85-82. Bell City's William Bogan broke the Hoopfest record for more two-point field goals made with 13, breaking the record set last year by Vashon's Leon Powell when he made 11.

Scott County Central's Caleb Johnson and D.D. Gillespie tied a Hoopfest record for most free throws attempted with 11 each. They now share that record with Jeremy Brinkmeyer of Cape Notre Dame.

Scott County Central led 25-18 after the first quarter but their shooting went cold in the second as Bell City outscored Scott County Central 20-7 to take a 38-32 lead at halftime.

D.D. Gillespie and Drew Thomas led Scott County Central with 23 points each. Caleb Johnson finished with 22.

Will Bogan led Bell City with a game high 26 points. Nick Niemczik tossed in 24.

Game 5 - Belleville, IL (Althoff) 68, Jackson 57

The Belleville (Althoff) Crusaders made their first trip to the Bank of Missouri Heartland Hoopfest a successful one as they beat the Jackson Indians 68-57.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 22-14 lead after one quarter and led 39-31 at the popcorn pause.

The Crusaders outscored Jackson 11-8 in the third en route to the win.

Cruasder Justin Jones led all scorers with 27 points which is a Hoopfest record, breaking the old record of 26 points set by Leon Powell of Vashon set last year. Will Lawson added 12 while Pat Young tossed in 11.

Jackson was paced by Antonio Garritano's 14 points. Jake Leet tossed in 13, Steven Spradlin ended with 11 and Marcus Harris finished with 10.

Game 6 - Lafayette 61, Cape Central 38

Tyler Griffey tossed in 20 while Will Kirksey ended with 13 to lead the Lafayette Lancers to a 61-38 win over Cape Central in game six of the Bank of Missouri Heartland Hoopfest.

Cape Central led 12-11 after one but Lafayette regained the lead at 27-25 after outscoring the Tigers 16-13 in the second.

Lafayette put the game away in the second half, outscoring Cape Central 34-13 en route to the win.

George Hamilton led the Tigers with 14 points. Kerry Walker tossed in 10.

Lafayette broke a Hoopfest record for least fouls in a game with seven. The old record was eight set in 2004 by Charleston against Vashon.

Game 7 - Webster Groves 59, Charleston 54

In the upset of the Bank of Missouri Heartland Hoopfest, the Webster Groves Statesmen knocked off the top-ranked team in Class 3, the Charleston Blue Jays 59-54.

Webster Groves led 21-17 after the first quarter but the Blue Jays tied the game at 30-30 at halftime after outscoring the Statesmen 13-9 in the second.

After the third quarter horn, the Statesmen had built a 10 point lead and despite a comeback by the Blue Jays in the fourth, Webster Groves held on for the five-point upset win.

Zach Rebel led the Statesmen with 17 points. Drew Hanlen and Devon Dace each tossed in 12 while Alonzo Wrickerson had 10.

Charleston was paced by Justin Clark's 21 points. Jamarcus Williams tossed in 10.

Game 8 - White Station (Memphis, TN) 56, Vashon (St. Louis) 46

The White Station Spartans of Memphis, TN made their first appearance at the Bank of Missouri Heartland Hoopfest Saturday and defeated the Vashon Wolverines of St. Louis 56-46 in the final game of the eight-game buffet.

White Station jumped out to a 22-14 lead after the first quarter but the Wolverines, coached by former NBA player Anthony Bonner, cut the lead down to five points, trailing 31-26 at the pause.

In the third quarter, the Spartans outscored Vashon 13-8 to take a 44-34 lead heading to the fourth.

Joe Jackson led White Station with a game high 19 points. Jordan Miller tossed in 18.

Vashon was paced by Derron Hobbs, Cornelius Walker and Leon Powell who each had 10 points.
