This is the fifth installment in a series highlighting the basketball teams participating in The Bank of Missouri Heartland Hoopfest 2008.
This will be the fourth appearance at the Heartland Hoopfest for the Charleston High School Bluejays. Coach Danny Farmer's team had a very successful season last year with a record of 17-9 while playing in the Southeast Missouri Conference. Farmer's team returns seven letterman from last year's team including two all-conference and all-region recipients in Antonio Riggens and Donald Dixon. Riggens is currently being recruited by Drury College. Charleston hopes that the leadership of their returning core mixed with their fast break style offense and full court pressure on defense can be the right combination to add their first win at the Heartland Hoopfest.
Gateway Institute of Technology High School out of St. Louis Missouri will make their first ever appearance at the Heartland Hoopfest to take on Charleston. Gateway Tech hopes to build on their impressive 24-5 record in the St. Louis Public High League with their eight returning letterman and new head basketball coach Joe Cannamore. Cannamore comes from Roosevelt High School which is also in the St. Louis Public High League.
Coach Joe Cannamore talked about his team's style of play by saying, "We like to play an up-temp style of basketball offensively, pressuring the defense at every opportunity. Defensively, we like to pressure full and half-court man to man, and at times we may employ a full-court zone press to speed up the tempo."
This game between Charleston High School and Gateway Tech will take place at the Perry Park Center at 3:50 p.m. It will be followed by the game between Chaminade and Greene County Tech at 5:25 p.m. Information on this game will be coming your way next week.
